Who We Are
Students Serve is run completely by volunteers, which is unique for a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. This enables nearly all donations to go directly to students so that they can make a difference in communities.
The organization was started in 2006 when a student at the College of William and Mary became irritated with her undergraduate classes. For their coursework and class assignments, students were coming up with new and realistic plans for solving the problems that they were learning about in textbooks. However, few of her friends could use their ideas to improve communities and address world problems because they didn't have the basic funding that was necessary. In many cases they only needed a couple hundred dollars. Many of them were already in deep debt due to student loans, so they couldn't afford to donate their own money.
Because of this, Angela Perkey recruited volunteers and ran Students Serve out of her dormroom. Now, she works fulltime as a business analyst but is still acting as the Executive Director of the organization in the Washington, D.C. area. She has also written Change the World, Change Your Life, a book that explains how you can engage in volunteer service that enriches your life and helps you discover your life purpose.
