What We Do
Who We Are
Julia Young
A student at American University in Washington, DC, Julia is using her grant from Students Serve to develop Community Learners Advancing in Spanish and English (CLASE), a student-led organization that addresses the needs of the Hispanic employees on campus. The majority of employees are Latino immigrants with minimal formal education experience, and CLASE pairs college students with workers so that they can learn English and basic communication skills.

Rose Vogel
Rose is receiving a Students Serve grant so that she can teach locally owned Latino businesses in Washington state, specifically restaurants, how to recycle. She will demonstrate the money they can save while reducing landfill waste and will also equip the restaurant owners and their customers with the resources they need to start recycling.

Kenneth Williams
Kenneth is a student at Morehouse and is using his grant from Students Serve to develop the Next Generation Scholarship Program, which helps college students at risk for dropping out of school due to financial reasons find funding so that they can continue their classes. The organization hosts Scholarship Sundays, weekly sessions to help students work on scholarship applications and learn about opportunities to receive funds to stay in school.

Raechel Schneider
Raechel, a student at Texas A&M, received a grant to initiate a student art project on campus that will surround buildings under construction with murals and ultimately raise money to help promote the arts in the community.

Laura Rolfe
Laura has been given a Students Serve grant for “Girls on the Go”, a weekly after school program that she is starting to teach 4th-5th grade girls in Kentucky healthy eating habits and encourage regular physical activity. The girls learn about healthy body image and self esteem by connecting with college athletes who act as positive role models.

Sharon Frieson
Harmony In Me is a substantial preteen outreach program Sharon is developing in Chicago, which uses hip hop to incorporate positive social values and direct participants toward higher education in a language that they can relate with and understand. Local college students are writing the fun and interactive lessons and sharing their experiences with the preteen participants.

Meredith Hart
Meredith will be conducting photography workshops for children participating in the after school program at East Side Neighborhood Services, a non-profit community organization near the University of Minnesota. The workshops are intended to instill a basic understanding of composition, lighting, storytelling, and exhibit making in the realm of photography. The kids, ages 6 to12, will get the chance to document beauty in their community and life.

Julie Kohn
Julie is a student at Bucknell University in Pennsylvania, and she will be starting PROGRESS (Providing Resources fOr GED and Returning Education Students) to pair individuals in nearby the low-income housing neighborhoods with college students that help them earn their GED certificates. Obtaining the GED provides the recipient with greater career opportunities and a better sense of accomplishment and self-worth.
